Our History

Shri Sant Gadgebaba Mahavidyalaya, Kapashi was established in 1985 by Hon. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe, the founder of our mother institution, Shri Swami Vivekanand Education Institution, Kolhapur. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe devoted his whole life for the holy cause of spreading education to every corner of the state of Maharashtra with his motto, “Propagation of Education for Knowledge, Achievement and Culture.” As a result of his severe efforts, the institute has succeeded in establishing its 406 branches which include preprimary schools, primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges, senior colleges, hostels and others. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe, a great warrior lived for education, fought for imparting education and died only with his dream of spreading education.
The establishment of our college has its different story. The holy social saint, late Shinde Maharaj, previously Chairman of Gadgebaba Trust, Pandharpur performed a pioneer role in starting this college to stop inconveniences being faced by the students of this remote and hilly region. Being a bosom friend to Bapuji Salunkhe, he visited Bapuji and eagerly insisted on starting a college in his village, Kapashi. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe accepted his proposal. In respect of seeking approval of the government and affiliating university, with the support of the villagers, honourable Shinde Maharaj and Bapuji had to struggle hard. Their struggle resulted in seeking approval of both the authorities and in 1985, with the affiliation of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, the college named Shri Sant Gadgebaba Mahavidyalaya, Kapashi had been established. Later on, Shivaji University, Kolhapur gave it continuous affiliation from June 2003 onwards. The Mahavidyalaya also got recognition under the Section 2(f) & 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 on 31/03/2006.

The college is located in hilly region village, Kapashi, forty kilometres away from the district place, Kolhapur of Maharashtra State at the latitude of 16.935505o and at the longitude of 74.01538o. In this single faculty college, more than350 students enroll every year for the degree of B. A. and pass their examinations successfully with good numbers. At the initial stage, the college had sought approval for Arts and Science wings and the affiliating university had given approval for both the Arts and Science streams. However, due to the scarcity of students for Science wing, it had to be stopped. The faculty of Arts started with about 100 students at entry year. The College had started departments in the subjects of Marathi, Hindi, History, English, Sociology and Economics. However, the University gave approval to the departments of Marathi, Hindi, History and Economics as entire subjects and English, Geography, Sociology and Political Science as Optional Subjects up to B.A. Part II level. The Mahavidyalaya also made efforts to start some Vocational Courses for the benefit of students. However, the response was lukewarm.
The Mahavidyalaya strives to do everything possible for it to bring about holistic development of the students. All the faculties of our Mahavidyalaya treat the nearby peasant families as their own and make efforts to make them aware of knowledge, achievement and development and persuade the parents of the students to educate their wards. The Mahavidyalaya also provides financial aid to poor students from Students-Aid-Fund. Our Library provides students with book bank facility. The faculties also takes remedial classes for differently-abled students.
It publishes its annual magazine “Gadgebaba” every year so as to inculcate writing habit among the students. Our students win prizes for their articles published in our College magazine at University level competition for magazine and the articles in various forms.
Our students participate in various sports events at intercollegiate and zonal level competitions. Being from hilly and mountainous area, they have tremendous physical fitness and stamina which may help them achieve meritorious success at state, national and even international sports events. The real barrier for these sports persons is that of proper training and advanced facilities to channelize their career in sports. Well equipped gymkhana and gymnasium are the urgent needs for these students to shape their future in sports as the platform for securing jobs in the departments of defense and security.
Our college students have great taste for cultural activities. They participate in college level cultural activities. However, lacking proper training and scanty recreational facilities hinder the progress of cultural journey of these artists towards the higher level competitions. Our students also are intellectually competent enough to face the global challenges and requirements in the fields of careers. However, the moderate number of advanced audio-visual facilities and ICT equipment are making our students lag a little bit behind the mainstream of globally required skills and knowledge.
We are trying our level best to bring about holistic development of the students of our college to provide advanced facilities, training and education as well. With the help of these supports, the students will be facilitated with a full-fledged swing of platform from which our students may jump into the mainstream of the competitive world with the skills sufficient to outwit the competitors of their careers.
